Tips for Starting a Prayer Room
When I was in college, I didn’t know how to pray.
I had grown up in the church and loved God, but I often felt stuck when it came to actually talking to Him. So I started asking: “Lord, teach me to pray.”
One day, I stumbled into a little room tucked behind the chapel on campus. It was a simple space, with worship music playing on an old cd-player in the corner, and paper-covered walls filled with Bible verses, prayers, and drawings.
I began to cry, and my life has never been the same since.
While I knew I could pray anywhere, there was something about physically being in a room set apart for prayer that helped me slow down, tune in, and stay longer. I read others’ prayers and found myself praying outside of my normal patterns. I learned to pray by praying with the community, even if they weren’t in the room with me.
During my four years of college, I returned again and again. Sometimes I went into the chapel if it was empty, drawn in by its beauty and silence. Other times I tucked into that little prayer room, surrounded by art and scripture.
But when I graduated, I found myself longing again. I couldn’t find a prayer room, or even an open chapel to go to for prayer. I knew prayer wasn’t limited to a room, but I missed having a dedicated, focused space to go and meet with God. So I prayed again and God answered in a miraculous way by leading me to another prayer room (a story for another time!).
All that to say, if your church or ministry center doesn’t have a prayer room yet, I encourage you to consider creating one.
Why Prayer Rooms Matter
As ministry leaders, we preach that prayer is foundational, but often, we don’t give people space or structure to actually grow in it. Prayer can feel overwhelming or out of reach. Many believers don’t know where to start.
A prayer room provides an answer. It gives people the tools to begin, the atmosphere to linger, and the space to encounter God.
Jesus said, “My house will be called a house of prayer” (Matthew 21:13) - is that what our churches are known for?
What if the most powerful thing you could do as a ministry leader is not to add more programming, but to create space?
Just like going to the gym, a prayer room helps people make the time to pray, show up, stay, and provides tools and resources to help them pray, stay focused and engaged.
So, How Do You Start a Prayer Room?
1. Look at your space.
If you have a room that can be set aside permanently, amazing. Keep it open whenever the building is open. For safety, make sure the door stays open and someone is nearby.
If not, try a Pop-Up Prayer Room. Host it once a month, for a special season like Lent or Advent, or during a retreat or youth event.
You can also integrate a prayer room experience into worship services. Set up prayer stations, play soft music, and give people 30 minutes to one hour to pray and reflect. Then gather and debrief. It's powerful to hear how God meets people in the quiet.
No extra room? Use what you have. A hallway can become a prayer walk with printed prayer stations. A wall in a coffeshop can even be transformed into a reflective prayer wall.
2. Set the atmosphere.
Lighting: Keep it soft and welcoming.
Music: An old-school CD player still works best, with a few instrumental worship CDs, as it doesnt require any fancy technology!
Prayer Tools: Offer a variety of prompts and supplies in the room, such as:
A map with sticky notes for world and local intercession
A wall for written prayers and requests
An art station for reflective prayer
A few Bibles and devotional books
Rotate your themes every few weeks to keep the room fresh and spiritually engaging.
If multiple people will be in the room, consider using booklets with prayer station directions. That way, people don’t crowd around a sign, they can sit, reflect, and go at their own pace.
